Agronomy Group 1 Agronomy Group 5

The Agronomy Group annual Field Day held on the 30th November last year was a great success with over 100 people attending the day.

Topics and trials covered on the day were:

  • New spring milling wheat cultivar Sensas

- Fungicide (product and timing) trial
- Sulphur/nitrogen for bread quality
- Plant Growth Regulators

  • Tavern autumn barley fungicide trial (product and timings)
  • PGW Grain spring barley trial site featuring new spring cultivar Garner
  • PGW Grain spring wheat milling cultivar wheat trial site featuring new central European and South American material
  • FAR/PGW Grain Wizard and Ben faba bean trial site
  • PGW Seed Production cultivar Expo AR1 ryegrass trial site
  • New fungicide (Bayer and BASF) and PGR treatments (Agronica) on show
  • CLAAS Harvest Centre Canterbury machinery on show during lunch and BBQ

One of the highlights in the trial programme this year was the new spring wheat cultivar Sensas which was only a limited release in the spring of 2011.  A lot of work has been completed recently to try and support this new cultivar, for what is hoped will be a full commercial release in 2012 subject to flour mill approval.  The aim is to have an alternative to the premium bread quality cultivar Conquest in the marketplace.  Conquest is spring planted following winter greenfeed grazing through the winter.  Sensas is a very fast developer and can be planted a lot later in the spring than the current cultivars available in the market.
